PDF Help

Some of the content on this Web site is presented in the form of printable PDF (Portable Document Format) files. These pages are best viewed with the free Adobe Reader (formerly called Adobe Acrobat Reader) software. Adobe Reader allows you to take full advantage of the many features of PDF documents.

If you're having trouble viewing PDF files, click on one of the following topics:

More information on the PDF format can be found on the Adobe Web site.

Viewing PDFs in Windows (PC) Computers

By default, Adobe Reader is included as a plug-in on most Windows browsers (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox); you should already be able to view PDFs in your browser, with all the tools and features of Adobe Reader. If for some reason you are having difficulty viewing PDFs on a Windows computer, follow the steps outlined below, under Downloading and Installing Adobe Reader, to upgrade to the most recent version.

Viewing PDFs on Apple (Mac) Computers

Apple (Mac) computers do not necessarily come with Adobe Reader installed. If you do not have Adobe Reader, you will still be able to view the PDF files on this site:

You can also download and install Adobe Reader (see below) to view PDFs with all the features (toolbars, bookmarks, etc.). Once you have installed Adobe reader, PDF files will open within your Safari browser window, with all the tools and features of Adobe Reader.

NOTE: If you are using the Mozilla Firefox browser on an Apple Computer, you will not be able to view PDF files in a Firefox window, even if you have Adobe Reader Installed. When prompted, choose "Save to Disk". When the file has finished downloading, open it with Adobe Reader.

Downloading and Installing Adobe Reader

If you don't have Adobe Reader, or would like to upgrade to the most recent version , you can download and install it for free:

  1. Visit the Adobe Web site to download the Adobe Reader Installer file.
  2. Select your operating system (Windows, Mac, etc.), version, and language. If you're not sure what operating system or version you're working with, refer to the documentation that came with your computer.
  3. Follow the directions as indicated. Once the installer file downloads, open it (by double-clicking on it) if it doesn't open automatically.
  4. The installer file should install Adobe Reader on your computer. Follow the directions as indicated.
  5. When the installation is complete, you may have to re-start your Web browser program (Safari, Internet Explorer, etc.) to view PDF files with the Adobe Reader plug-in.

For more information about downloading and installing software for Apple computers, please view the following article on the Apple Web site:

Reopening PDFs to the Last Viewed Page.

You can set Adobe Reader to open previously-viewed PDF documents to the last page you were viewing before you closed each document:

  1. Open Adobe Reader.
  2. Open the Preferences dialog box by doing one of the following:

  3. Select the Startup category (in Windows, press S).
  4. Activate the "Reopen Documents To Last Viewed Page" drop-down menu (in Windows, press Alt+V), and then select "All Files."

If you prefer PDF documents to always open to the first page, select "Digital Editions Only" instead of "All Files" in Step 4, above. (A "Digital Edition" is a different Adobe file format, so the PDFs on the New Leader site will not be affected if this is selected.)
